
Five new health professionals have been appointed to the organization’s board of directors by North Carolina House and Senate, with a sixth to be named by Governor Josh Stein
On Monday, March 16, 2026, the North Carolina Institute of Medicine (NCIOM) announced the appointment of five new members to its board of directors.
The newly named members, chosen by North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, Speaker of the House Destin Hall, and Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger are:
“These appointments reflect a breadth of important experience, both across fields of health care and across geographic regions of North Carolina,” said Michelle Ries, President and CEO of the NCIOM. “We are grateful for Speaker Hall and President Pro Tem Berger’s thoughtful selections, and we are looking forward to working with these new board members.”
The new board members replace outgoing members Dr. William Way, Jr., Anita Bachmann, Brian McGinnis, Dr. Betsey Tilson, and Cory Hess. In 2026, Governor Josh Stein will also name a sixth member to the NCIOM’s board of directors.
In addition to changes to its board membership, the NCIOM announced that Dr. Lori Byrd will serve as its new board chair beginning in 2026. Byrd replaces Adam Sholar, who completed a full term as the NCIOM’s board chair in 2025.
“Those of us at the NCIOM are incredibly grateful for the dedicated service our outgoing board members have given to the NCIOM,” said Ries. “Adam will remain on the NCIOM’s board, and we are so grateful for the commitment of time and energy he has given us as our board chair.”
