Advancing Understanding: An Updated Opioid Research Agenda for North Carolina

Published October 17, 2025

In 2018, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services published the North Carolina Opioid Research Agenda, which has served as a guide for multiple research projects at North Carolina academic and non-profit research institutions. Given current policy context, observed trends in substance use and overdose, and local and world events since 2018, North Carolina would benefit from an updated state opioid research agenda.

This updated research agenda serves to reassess priority topics to study and inform state response to a rapidly evolving drug overdose epidemic through evidence generated by potential areas of study.

Abstract

In 2018, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services published the North Carolina Opioid Research Agenda, which has served as a guide for multiple research projects at North Carolina academic and non-profit research institutions. Given current policy context, observed trends in substance use and overdose, and local and world events since 2018, North Carolina would benefit from an updated state opioid research agenda.

This updated research agenda serves to reassess priority topics to study and inform state response to a rapidly evolving drug overdose epidemic through evidence generated by potential areas of study.
